数学 majors develop skills to pursue careers in many different fields, 和 studying mathematics as part of a liberal arts degree opens the doors to a world of opportunities. 梅根·索伦森，15岁 started her mathematical research at Concordia University Irvine 和 is currently continuing her studies at CU Denver. While at Concordia University Irvine, she presented research about fractals at the Pacific Coast 本科数学 Conference, explaining how imaginary numbers allow one to create computer screen backgrounds with intricate designs that repeat endlessly 和 never lose their intricacy.

Curriculum

The Concordia mathematics program provides you with a background for continued studies in mathematics, 业务, 和 other science-related fields. Students anticipating doing graduate work in mathematics leading towards careers in teaching at the college level or in 业务 should consider adding to their basic major courses in order to strengthen their background 和 foundation.

CSC 104: Fundamentals of Programming

This course covers the basic principles of computer programming 和 algorithm design using the C# programming language. The class addresses basic language syntax, 分支, 循环, 异常, I/O, 字符串处理, 最佳实践, 和 tools for writing quality computer programs. It also introduces the process of turning a program that was written in a high-level language into an intermediate language 和 how the operating system then loads 和 executes it. Students in the class will be able to write elementary programs that will run on the Microsoft .NET Framework 和 the open source equivalent, Mono.

MTH 371: Linear Algebra
3

This course will study properties of matrix arithmetic, systems of linear equations, 决定因素, 向量空间, 线性变换, 对角化, 内积, 和 applications of these topics. Prerequisite: C- or better in m 272.

MTH 387: Probability 和 Statistics I

This course will look at the probability 和 combinatorics; discrete 和 continuous r和om variables; the normal, γ, 卡方, 泊松, 和 binomial distributions with applications. Prerequisite: C- or better in m 373 (concurrent enrollment allowed). Offered alternate years.

MTH 489: Real Analysis

This course will provide an introduction to the advanced study of the real number system, 和 the ideas 和 proof techniques specific to mathematical analysis. Topics include properties of the real numbers, 序列, 系列, 限制, 连续性, 和分化. Prerequisite: C- or better in m 313 和 m 373. Offered alternate years.

Professor Julie Melberg

Professor Julie Melberg joined the Concordia mathematics faculty in 2010. Professor Melberg enjoys teaching mathematics at Concordia University Irvine, teaching Core 数学 classes as well as courses for the 数学 major. Her teaching 和 research focus on inquiry-based learning 和 encouraging students to develop life-long thinking skills.

Professor Melberg enjoys teaching mathematics at Concordia University Irvine, teaching Core 数学 classes as well as courses for the 数学 major.
